Fundraising & Updates

2015 Bursary Fund Awarded

We are pleased to announce that the fourth annual Memorial Bursary has been awarded to another amazing and deserving student at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

In the Spring of 2015 the Lenami Godinez Memorial Bursary Award was provided to a young female student taking a communications degree within SFU's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The amount awarded to the student was $2,700.

Since its inception four years ago, the Lenami Godinez Memorial Bursary Fund has grown to over $55,000 CAD, and has been awarded four times to deserving young women studying at SFU. In this time over $7,000 has been awarded to the students - lessening the enormous financial burden that international students face in pursuing their education.

The purpose of this fund was and is to help international female students at SFU who, like Lenami, work ferociously and unceasingly to integrate into a new country, pursue their education, and build and contribute to their communities. It was Lenami's idea to do this, but it has only been possible because of the amazing collection of friends, family, and communities who have stood together and contributed to this cause.

To all of our donors: thank you.
To all of our students: good luck.

A Message from the 2014 Bursary Award Winner

Lenami's bursary award has been awarded twice since her passing to two deserving and remarkable young women. The awardee of the 2014 bursary award provided a letter outlining her gratitude for the support of the community who helped build Lenami's bursary fund and it's impacts on her. Please see below for her message:

As a second year engineering student I received the 2014 Lenami Godinez Avila Bursary which was funded by Lenami's partner, family and friends, in her memory.

Receiving this bursary helps me take a break from my part-time job and provides me with the chance to spend more time on schoolwork and volunteering in my community.

I met Lenami's partner in early October along with the 2013 bursary recipient. We had a fantastic time together, sharing stories about our daily lives and our perspectives about the future. I was touched to hear about Lenami and her goal of helping international students in financial need at SFU.

I am from Dalian, China and coming to Canada is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Through the culture and language collision, I get the chance to view my life from a totally different angle. I am excited about the new environment, lifestyle, and also have begun to respect elements from my own culture because of this experience. People in Canada are warm and outgoing and the fantastic game and clubs at SFU make life more colourful for me.

I would like to be a hardware engineer in the near future and will probably go on to graduate school after working for a few years.

All in all, I would like to say thank you to all of the donors who gave to this fund at SFU. Your kind and generous help really provides international female students with a better chance. Your donations encourage us to keep our dreams and always have hope!

Fourth Speaker Announced...Chris Brandt!

The marriage of music and entrepreneurship has never been quite as strong as it is with Chris Brandt.

Chris Brandt is the Executive Director and co-founder of Music Heals (www.musicheals.ca), a charity supporting music therapy related initiatives across Canada. He spent 3 years as the President of the Board of Directors for Music BC, a non-profit society administering endeavours such as the Peak Performance Project and the 2009 Juno Awards. Furthermore, in 2004 he launched his own independent record label, and his passion for the local scene led him to gain additional experience in band management; as the Music Editor for a local publication; a contributing editor for another magazine; and as the host of an independent radio show for well over a decade.

Music Announcement: Lemming Dynasty

We're pleased to announce our band for the evening: the Lemming Dynasty.

Lemming Dynasty is a band well aware of their surroundings. Tim, Joel, and Adam Parent, along with Bruno Dominelli consciously reflect the climate in which they became – or are becoming – adults, in their music and lyrics. Slick grooves sauced in social outrage beget haunting melodies, peppered with a sly irony reminiscent of times when leaving a little to the imagination was as classy as it is classic. Intrinsic to the Dynasty's sound is a strong sense of soulful defiance; that unwavering purpose develops throughout the emerging band's repertoire as the young ensemble is engulfed in the creative thralls of self-discovery. One hears elements of grimy 70s funk, dirty grunge, electro punk and proggy jazz; but always in the context of a song, and always in the context of Lemming Dynasty. So in an era where retro is getting old again and your creepy uncle's dusty track suit graces the covers of sarcastic new wave magazine covers, Lemming Dynasty isn't afraid to punctuate their craft with tight arrangements, searing harmonies and riff-heavy bottom grooves.

Event details and tickets here:

  • Date: October 3, 2013
  • Time:7:00-10:00 pm
  • Location: Wise Hall, 1882 Adanac St., Vancouver, BC

Look forward to hearing them play!

Third Speaker Announced...Alex Mazerolle

It is no secret that sometimes the best advice comes from people who have struggled themselves. This is definitely the case with Alex Mazerolle, who as a young dancer struggled with issues of illness and self-esteem, but turned these could-be detrimental experiences into her vehicle to empower the next generation of female leaders with tools of love and respect.

With a deep passion for movement and its potential to empower and engender respect in individuals, Alex is the founder of Girlvana, an organization geared towards fostering compassionate and open-hearted attitudes in teenage girls and shifting the “mean girl” paradigm. Alex is also a Lululemon Ambassador and the creator of the popular Vancouver community event Yoga, Eat, Repeat. She has lent her teaching skills to such organizations as The Looking Glass Foundation, Dress for Success and the Africa Yoga Project.

Silent Auction and Storytelling Event Announced!

On October 3, 2013, the friends and family of Lenami Godinez-Avila are hosting a silent auction benefiting a memorial fund set up in her name at Simon Fraser University (SFU).

The endowment fund supporting a bursary established in Lenami’s name gives a student in financial need at SFU the chance to explore their education and discover their passions. Your support will help fulfil that dream each year.

Like many international students, Lenami and her family sacrificed a lot for her opportunity to study abroad. She worked and studied tirelessly at SFU to complete her degree expediently. However, it was only after graduation that she found her passion for sustainability and waste management. Lenami dreamed of, one day, creating a bursary fund to help students like her discover their passions during their studies and to launch their careers sooner and strengthen their communities.

Through our silent auction, we hope to raise funds to ensure an annual bursary can be awarded which could cover the costs of at least one course, associated books and some living expenses. We are reaching out to companies and organizations willing to honour Lenami’s memory by giving a young deserving student the opportunity to continue her studies. We are currently requesting:

a) Donations of products and services for auction, b) Donations or sponsorship of food or beverages during the event, c) Sponsorship to help cover venue costs, d) Sponsorship for incidental costs (print materials, etc.), and e) In-kind support in promoting the event.

Further details about the event, including ticket information, auction items, and our generous donors and sponsors will be posted here in the coming weeks. If your company or organization is willing to join us and our supporters with this Silent Auction please email: rememberinglena@gmail.com
