Lenami Dafne Godinez Avila

This website is in memory of Lenami Godinez Avila who we lost far too early in a hang-gliding accident in April 2012.

We love her. We miss her.

The content on this website is dedicated to furthering her dreams which we are trying to realize in her honour.

Born and raised in Mexico and Peru, Lenami lived nine years in Canada. She embraced her adult life in British Columbia through her studies, work, volunteering and many happy times with her friends and colleagues.  Lenami came to Canada to study at Simon Fraser University and received her degree in Economics and Latin America Studies.  An active student, it is fitting that the SFU bursary in her name is to be awarded annually to someone committed to community involvement, sustainability and demonstrating outstanding global citizenship.

Lenami’s first full time job was with the BC Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat  where she worked closely with 2010 games partners and many local, regional and international organizations and events.  Afterwards, she took on increasing administrative responsibilities with the province’s Public Guardian and Trustee office.  During these years in Canada, Lenami developed a passion and strong commitment to the environment.  Initially, she pursued these interests as a volunteer.  This included volunteering on food waste programs and eventually, she also pursued her environmental interests through employment as an Administrative Section Head with the Ministry of the Environment.

Lenami loved her family and, with the availability of current technologies, was frequently in touch with them. Proud of her Mexican heritage, she would enthusiastically explain traditions and culture. Lenami had a real zest for life enjoying the arts, biking, traditional and innovative foods and much, much more with her many friends.

We were privileged to spend time with her and are glad that so many people have supported her dream of a bursary to benefit international students. We are very appreciative of the contributions to the Lenami Godinez-Avila Memorial Endowment Fund, her memorial benches in their lovely and appropriate locations and other legacies to honour our exceptional friend.
